Mint Presents Work by Duccio Maria Gambi

Duccio Maria Gambi is a furniture and interior designer based in Florence. He has a strong theoretical background, having attended both the University of Florence and the Politecnico de Milano. In his studio he develops projects on commission as well as for his own collections. Both series are tailor-made, unique designs borne out of his multidisciplinary training and approach. Gambi’s main research is based on concrete casting techniques and language.

Monolith Altar

This piece is beautifully enhanced with the addition of resin and reclaimed brass filings, merging the rational and serious aspects of the shape and materials in order to create a strong graphic element. Once the concrete hardens the brass filings are brought to the surface by hand sanding. This addition gives the concrete mass a higher density, creating irregular cavities which are then filled with coloured and transparent resin, resulting in a unique surface.

Concrete Coffee Tables

These tables are made from reinforced concrete which is poured onto a surface to obtain a free and somewhat arbitrary shape. The thickness of the concrete decreases towards the outside of the table and the edges are left raw to enhance the design. The concrete pouring technique gives the table surface a beautiful colour variations. Gambi has successfully transformed the preconceptions of concrete as a heavy material into a light, airy and floating surface.

Inerte Grafico S2 Collection

For this collection recovered plastic from beaches and seashores is used as a graphic element. Using traditional Terrazzo techniques, discarded plastic objects are cut into small pieces and added into the concrete casting process. Once the concrete is hardened it is hand sculpted to reveal the coloured plastic elements suspended within. Through this process plastic is taken apart and enclosed in a definitive volume preventing it from being discarded in nature. This second series of the collection is composed of a round wall hanging, cube like side tables.

Inerte Grafico S1 Collection

For the first series of the Inerte Grafico collection, plastic becomes a coloured detail and renders a graphic addition to these monolithic pieces. The first series of the collection comprises a coffee-table, bench, stool, and a vase. All the pieces are created following a monolithic aesthetic, paying homage to the mass and the block-like appearance of the material. To create the collection, plastic recovered from beaches and seashores is added into the concrete casting process. Once the concrete is hardened the plastic is brought to the surface by hand sculpting.
