A LITTLE PRIVATE VIEW OF THINGS
1882 Ltd. with Robbie Williams
This autumn, the internationally acclaimed singer and songwriter Robbie Williams has unveiled three vibrant and imaginative ceramic artworks, created in collaboration with the design-forward contemporary ceramics brand 1882 Ltd. These striking pieces will be exclusively showcased by Mint.
Inspired by two drawings by Williams of Jesus and The Pope, the pieces have been brought to life by the masterful hands of 1882 Ltd.’s craftsmen based in Stoke-on-Trent, not only the historical epicentre of British pottery, but Williams’ childhood hometown. Collaborating with 1882 Ltd. provided the singer with a natural connection to the place he grew up – and where many of his family have worked in the industry – and the art he is now making.
“I’m from Stoke and we are the potteries and it’s what we are famous for. And it’s what has given us relevance on the map, in the UK and around the world. It is ingrained in me – we are of clay.” ~ Robbie Williams

Using either Posca pens or an iPad, Robbie creates what he calls ‘inklings’ – personal reflections and keen observations of others, resonating with a vivid pop-art sensibility. These inklings capture a spectrum of emotions: they can be vulnerable or self-deprecating, occasionally provocative, and at times empowering, often playfully critiquing celebrity and wellness culture. Yet, each piece is consistently infused with Williams’ signature wry wit.
Initially turning to art as a form of mental health therapy to quiet his ‘crowded mind,’ Williams now feels “compelled” to create daily. This transformation is particularly resonant within the context of Mint Gallery, where innovation and bold expression are celebrated. Mint’s dedication to fostering creative risk-taking aligns seamlessly with Williams’ exploration of a new identity beyond his music.

Williams’ interpretations of Jesus and The Pope represent a natural evolution from his early attempts to capture the human face. “They were just me on my way to figuring out what I could make if I was no longer what the world recognises as talented” he reflects with characteristic self-awareness. His work is an introspective exploration of themes such as belonging, community, and his ongoing quest for validation and connection.
