UMPRUM: Czech’s Academy of Arts
The Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design (often abbreviated to UMPRUM) is located in Prague, Czech Republic. The country’s reputation for design is first-class and many of their leading figures once graduated from the university.
Mint has long been a supporter of designers from the Czech Republic so, for last year’s LDF, we thought it only appropriate to show a range of work by some of their brightest and youngest. Unfortunately for you the pieces have now left the gallery. Luckily, however, we’ve compiled a little reminder so you can familiarise yourselves with their genius once again!
Tadeas Podracky, JAARS
A marriage of conceptual art and traditional glassmaking to break down the conventional model between form and function. Each glass vase is made in the famous Moser glass factory in the Czech Republic.
Barbora Vinarova, Porcelain Tableware
A large tea set to highlight the diversity, beauty, fragility and vulnerability of nature.
Klara Chrudinova, Landscape of the Soul
A series of porcelain rings inspired by primitive art. The designer shapes each piece by hand, beginning with perfect circles and gradually distorting them into prehistoric forms.
Tereza Galbava, Ritual Collection
Inspiration for this collection comes by way of Amazonia: the life of Amazonian tribes, local handmade instruments, ritual objects and jewellery.
Tomas Vap, Be Strong!
Creation was triggered by the Lance Armstrong doping confession. Each jar reads ‘Be Strong!’ and is made from glass with a limestone top.
Adam Zelezny, The Blast
A series of bowls created by controlled detonation. An alternative method of ceramic shaping…
