Wallpaper* January 2011
Mint is pleased to announce that ‘Taffelstukken’ lighting objects by Daphna Isaccs and Laurens Manders have been shortlisted as part of the ‘Best Domestic Design’ of 2010 in the January issue of Wallpaper*. ‘Tafelstukken’ lighting objects in grey ceramic tones were commissioned by Mint as a unique series. We will update you on the results at the end of January!
Made from Oak and Porcelain the five ‘Tafelstukken’ are ‘a contemporary take on the classic centrepiece’, functioning as lights as well as bowls and side tables. According to Daphna Isaccs and Laurens Manders, both graduates of the Design Academy in Eidnhoven, the playful pieces can be used to store or display items such as keys, books, magazines and fruit!
This issue also features designs by this year’s ‘the next big things’ including work from Yuya Kurata and Chiara Onida. Both who exhibited first at Mint as part of the London Design Festival September 2010.
Kurata worked for an Osaka lighting company before starting his MA at the RCA. ‘I focus on enhancing the practicality of the everyday,’ he says. His ‘Stool for Two’ is designed for sharing.
Turin-born Onida has developed a collection of objects, including these water carafe’s and glasses pictured above, that explores the use of sound and rhythm to celebrate the small rituals of everyday life.
This issue also features a tray from the collection ‘Saved By Droog’. Especially for this collection, Droog challenged 14 designers to create new products out of objects from bankrupt’s assets. This challenge has resulted in a series of 19 products, varying from trolleys for dogs to handkerchiefs with the latest headline news.
