And the winners are …

At the beginning of January Mint was pleased to announce that ’Taffelstukken’ lighting objects by Daphna Isaccs and Laurens Manders had been shortlisted as part of the ‘Best Domestic Design’ of 2010 in the January issue of Wallpaper*.

Unfortunately they did not win but we were pleased to see that they were included in the feature on some of the best contenders!

‘Best Domestic Design’ was awarded to the ‘Wood -burning Stove’ by Yanes Wuhl for ECAL. Brazil-born, Switzerland based designer Wuhl designed this wood burner for his diploma project at Ecole Cantonale d’Art de Lausanne (ECAL). The concrete base can store wood for the cast-iron stove above, while the smoke outlet is at the back so the flat top can be used to warm dishes or boil a kettle. If the enthusiastic response at Wuhl’s degree show is anything to go by, the stove should be in productions very soon!

‘Best Dining Table’ was awarded to the ‘Concorde’ table by Emmanuel Gallina, for Poliform. Shapely legs, perfect proportions and curves in all the right places, Gallina’s ‘Concorde’ is a genuine head-turner!

‘Best Chair’ was awarded to the ‘Comback’ chair by Patricia Urquiola, for Kartell. For plastic specialists Kartell, Urquiola dramatically and successfully pulled the Windsor chair into the 21st Century.

‘Best Mirror’ was awarded to the ‘Dawn/Dusk ‘ mirror by Minale-Maeda, for Droog. This looking glass by the Rotterdam duo brings either a burst of sunrise or a dusky glow to your reflections.

“Best Side Table’ was awarded to the ‘Shift’ table by Patternity & Toby Winteringham. The London-based pattern revivalists bring a new graphic vibrancy to veneer with their colourful ‘Shift’ side table.

‘Best Desk’ was awarded to the ‘Pinch’ desk by Pinch. A desk that will take the load and then a load more. The pigeon holes, which can also sit on the desk , offer even more potential for creative cluttering!

Mint’s personal favorite winner is the ‘Join’ screen by BCXZY, who were awarded ‘Best Screen’. Join consists of a series of three space-dividers. In each piece two lined frames, representing the humble integrity inherent to the craft, are visually merged to create a moment that deviates from the conventional Tategu aesthetic, and introduces angles and shapes that are not commonly used in the craft.
